The challenges of sustainable clothing

During COVID-19 in recent years, people were stuck at home, reducing consumer demand and leaving a lot of fabric and clothing unsold, resulting in a lot of waste in the garment industry. And my current research is about sustainability in clothing, and what I am doing now is taking discarded or second-hand clothing, fabrics and trims and breaking them down and reorganizing them to design a new set of garments. I want to highlight the value of second-hand clothes and discarded items through some reuse. I will explore the sustainability that exists in my life.

Sustainability is one of the main ways forward for society, but it is still in its infancy and although many of the leading brands in the clothing market are looking at ways to change the waste of production, the savings are still very small. Specifically, I think the challenge for the future of sustainable apparel is the fabric, because it consumes a lot of water and produces a lot of pollution. So I'm more of a proponent of the garment industry reusing garments and fabrics that have already been produced, but the challenge is the acceptance of used items and the possibility of reinventing garments. However, I believe that with the spread of environmental knowledge and sustainable development, these problems will be overcome slowly, but it will also require more efforts from us as designers to achieve sustainable development of clothing.
